  61.         Discussion about manga, a term used to denote the popular
  62.         art and its artstyle that is derived originally and
  63.         primarily from Japanese graphic novels, and any comics or
  64.         art (from any country) with strong manga influence.

  89. recommend that people interested in American or Asian animation check
  90. out the newsgroups rec.arts.animation and rec.arts.anime and likewise,
  91. people interested in non-asian comics check out the rec.arts.comics
  92. hierarchy.  I'm sure that the readers of rec.arts.comics would be
  93. dismayed to realize that their hierarchy should be moved under
  94. rec.arts.manga and we in no way mean to impose on any other
  95. newsgroup.

  100. If you're a new NetNews reader and don't know the correct protocol and
  101. etiquette for posting messages, the following files accessible in the
  102. news.announce.newusers newsgroup are recommended reading:

  106.     - "Emily Postnews Answers Your Questions"

  108. Some basic tips to reduce the signal-to-noise ratio:
  109.  
  110. - If you don't see postings about a subject you're interested in (and which is
  111.   related to this newsgroup), don't gripe, POST AN ARTICLE ABOUT THAT SUBJECT!
  112.   If you receive no reply in a week, TRY AGAIN!  Fires don't always start with
  113.   the first spark.

  115. - If you feel the need to insult someone, do it by electronic mail, or better
  116.   yet, write a scathing message and then throw it away.  Please don't do it

  144. Japanese word for animation, pronounced "ah-nee-may"

  146. Anonymous FTP:  
  147. A method to log into a remote machine without needing an account, and extracting
  148. software from it.  A list of machines with manga resources available through 
  149. anonymous FTP is given later on.  If you want to use anonymous FTP but don't 
  150. know how, ask your local System Administrator.

  152. Bishonen: 
  153. "beautiful male" manga, female oriented manga with a more 'soft' art
  154. style than the standard. Males are androgynous to effeminately
  155. rendered.

  157. Compressed text:  
  158. Text files compressed with the Unix compress(1) program.  This is done to long 
  159. text files (like manga scripts) to save disk storage space.  In order to view 
  160. such a file, you must first run uncompress(1) or an equivalent program in order 
  161. to convert it back to its original form.  You could also use zcat(1) to view the
  162. contents of the file without decompressing it.

  186. GIF is a format developed at CompuServe to store color computer graphics in a 
  187. compact, machine independent format.  To view a GIF file you need a program that
  188. reads the GIF file and produces an image in the format used by your computer 
  189. system.  The /gifstuff directory in the ix3.ucc.utexas.edu anonymous FTP site 
  190. contains GIF viewers for Amiga, Apple II and IIgs, Macintosh, MS-DOS, Sun, and 
  191. X.  If you can't find what you're looking for, you can ask in the appropriate 
  192. newsgroup for your computer, or in alt.graphics.pixutils.

  204. A code which allow Japanese characters (kana) to be transfer among western 
  205. computer networks.  You would need a special program/decoder to read the 
  206. original Japanese character on your computer.

  209. A new kind of scheme for graphic compression.  You would need a decompression
  210. program or a viewer program for viewing JPEG just as you would for a GIF file.

  213. Kimagure Orange Road, a popular romance comedy manga, by Izumi Matsumoto.

  215. Manga: 
  216. Pronounced "man-gah".  A type of Japanese artform which has it's roots
  217. in Ukiyo-e wood prints and other traditional art.  In it's popular
  218. culture form of Asian sequential art and graphic storytelling, manga
  219. can be found in most Japanese bookstores.  The manga style of artwork
  220. is even finding it's way into American comics
  221.  
  222. Manga CD:  
  223. CD that is produced for the sole reason of listening while reading the 
  224. corresponding manga title.

  226. Mailing list:  
  227. A method of communication between fans of a given subject without the need of a 
  228. newsgroup.  A member of a mailing list sends e-mail to a machine called a 
  229. "mailing list server", which in turn sends copies of the e-mail to all the 
  230. members of the mailing list.  To subscribe to the mailing list, send e-mail to 
  231. the mailing list server.  The first line of the e-mail should look like this:

  234. Mecha:    
  235. Roughly, Japanese for "mechanicals".  Most of the so-called "giant robot" manga 
  236. are known as mecha manga.

  238. Model kit:  
  239. Scale model.  It follow The most popular varieties of these are:
  240.     injection-molded - this is the typical polyestyrene scale model
  241.         most people are familiar with.
  242.     garage kits - usually done from plastic resin (for mecha) or vinyl
  243.         (for character models).  These tend to be VERY expensive
  244.         (They generally start at $40 and can easily reach ten times as 
  245.         much!)

  248. Original Animation Video.  Made for video productions.

  250. Otaku:
  251. Japanese for "fanboy", a slang to describe someone who is obsessed with one 
  252. specific hobby.  Not in common usage in Japan.

  264. Self Addressed and Stamped Enevelope

  266. Script:    
  267. An English-text script for a particular manga.  Very useful for Japanese-
  268. impaired manga fans.

  270. Shojo:  
  271. Young Girl, commonly use to describe manga with a particular styles that  
  272. were targeted for young girls.

  274. Shonen:  
  275. Young Boy, commonly use to describe manga with a particular styles that  
  276. were targeted for young boys.

  278. Synopsis:  
  279. A text description of manga, possibly with some snippets of dialogue thrown in. 
  280. Unlike translations, a synopsis does not require the approval of the legal owner
  281. of the manga before it is made publicly available.

  283. Usenet Manga Titles List:
  284. A compiled list from the combined efforts of rec.arts..manga.  It lists all the 
  285. Japanese manga magazines with its current running manga titles.
